নৌপরিবহনমন্ত্রী শাজাহান খান বলেছেন, ‘খালেদা জিয়ার সামাজিক অবস্থান ও বয়স বিবেচনায় নিয়ে তার পাঁচ বছর সাজা হয়েছে। খালেদা জিয়ার আইনজীবীরা হাইকোর্টে আপিল করলে তার সাজার মেয়াদ না কমে ১০ বছরও হতে পারে।’

আজ শুক্রবার সকালে মাদারীপুরে আচমত আলী খান স্টেডিয়ামে মিনি আর্টিফিশিয়াল টার্ফের উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে নৌমন্ত্রী এ কথা বলেন।

এসময় মন্ত্রী বেগম জিয়াকে সতর্ক করে বলেন, ‘কয়েক বছর আগে মাদারীপুর জেলা বিএনপির সভাপতি আবু বকর সিদ্দিককে দুর্নীতির দায়ে নিম্ন আদালত সাজা দিয়েছিলো। পরে তিনি উচ্চ আদালতে আপিল করলে তার সাজা না কমে উল্টো দ্বিগুণ হয়েছিল।’

নৌমন্ত্রী আরও বলেন, ‘মানুষকে পুড়িয়ে-পিটিয়ে হত্যা করে কখনই গণতন্ত্র রক্ষা করা যায় না। এ দেশে খালেদার সমর্থক নেই। তা-না হলে আদালতে বিএনপি নেত্রীর পাঁচ বছরের সাজা হয়েছে, খালেদা জিয়ার মুক্তির জন্য রাজপথে কেউ আন্দোলনে নামছে না। এতেই প্রমাণিত হয়, জনগণ তাঁর বিএনপি থেকে সরে গেছে। আজকে খালেদার পক্ষে আন্দোলন করার মতো রাজপথে কেউ নেই।’

উক্ত অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশ ফুটবল ফেডারেশনের সভাপতি কাজী সালাউদ্দিন, মাদারীপুরের অতিরিক্ত জেলা প্রশাসক (রাজস্ব) সৈয়দ ফারুক আহম্মেদ, পুলিশ সুপার মোহাম্মদ সরোয়ার হোসেন, সদর উপজেলা চেয়ারম্যান পাভেলুর রহমান শফিক খানসহ আরো অনেকে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
